Below are some images of a physical model of the design scheme. It has allowed me to explore the spaces in a more detailed way and gives a better sense of how the scheme looks and interacts.

Above is a quick attempt of illustrating the concept of lighting some or all of the structural elements to make the building a landmark building within the city as well as in the south area of the city.

I am not sure how the photoshop technique has come out but I think gives an idea of what the concept is seeking to achieve.

Beginning to start to form the language of my building design. As the images reveal the external facade is broken down by sporadic solid elements and between them is filled by glazed elements. The solid elements will take a structural form as well as including a luminous cladding to contrast with the cities’ illuminated cathedral.

The structure will also affect the internal elements creating a large, light and airy space with interesting shadows being projected into the internal space as the renders reveal.

This scheme looks at an earlier concept and sketching of mapping the specific flows on people such as passenger flow to platform, staff movements, pedestrian flow through the building as shown in the sketch below.

The images below are a selection of massing models which illustrate the mapped flow through, around, over and under the raised railway tracks. Each colour represents a space and flow that combine to form the station.Orange- platform areas, Yellow and Blue passenger movement to green- staff areas.

These images show the potential forms and spaces created when glass walls are introduced to depict the areas. They also illustrate raised platforms and the relationships to the surrounding context.

An early model exploring the potential concept of a wave generated from the Brayford Pool that is located close to the train lines. The model explores the different speeds of waves and the numerous layers to provide the levels, spaces and canopies for the building.

I am pleased with how the images have been processed but I feel the form and layout need alot more development work.

The images also explore potential forms of how to support the raised train lines and how to link it with the station itself.

_ Raising the Tracks

An aspect of my proposal will incorporate the raising of the railway lines by 3/4 meters. As the images below highlight the train lines cause two points at busy points along the main High Street and close to the university to have level crossings. This causes traffic and pedestrian congestion when the level crossing are activated, which are often take long waits for the large crate trains to pass.

By lifting the lines it will free up these two areas and aid the flow of the city between the north and south districts of the city.

This aspect will provide a significant element to my scheme in design terms and how the project will have a positive impact of the city by allowing better movement around the city as highlighted in the Enquiry by design study of the city.

Yellow lines illustrate pedestrian movement around and to pink highlighted the train station from surrounding areas such as the High Street. The purple nodes indicate waiting areas and build up spots of pedestrians which all have implementing factors on the movement to the train station. The blue elements indicate the busy traffic routes around the station site and also access the train station site. The red flows show the train movements through the area and how they cross other flows of movement to cause disrupted areas.

Uphill District _ of the city. The image below illustrates some key landmarks of the area such as the cities cathedral and the 2006 Collection Museum by Panter Hudspith Architects. The panoramic image at the bottom is taken from the cities castle and highlights the cathedral located in the Uphill District in contrast to the train station in the Downhill District.

Downhill District _ of the city. The image illustrates key areas within the district such as the Brayford Pool, University buildings and the commercial high street.

The quarters of the city _ the city is made up from a series of quarters that are highlighted in the image below. The Cultural and Historical quarter (RED) is located at the highest point of the city in the Uphill district. It consists of the oldest part of the city with landmarks such as Lincoln castle and Cathedral, which is a dominant focal point above the city. The High Street quarter (YELLOW) is the commercial and modern retail area of the city in the Downhill district and is linked to the Uphill district via Steep Hill. The Brayford Water Front quarter (BLUE) is a contemporary area of the city built up of bars and restaurants that over looks a natural lake formed on the River Witham. The final section is the University quarter (PURPLE) that occupies the cities university district that also over look the Brayford Lake and continue along the River Witham to the West of the city. It is a growing section of the city that has been builds from scratch as well as converting disused railway buildings to form the university campus.

_ Progression onto Thesis Project

The next and final focus of the year entails my thesis project. This will take the form of re-designing Lincoln Train Station. Below is the A4 working manifesto document we are required to produce which highlights some of my aims and my narrative for the project.

Focus now begins on getting stuck into producing an A3 document for January that includes a substantial insight into: _site analysis _ the buildings brief _ design issues.

Just got back from a tutorial with my group tutor Steve Morant and a review of my final presentation with my year tutor Bob Felix.

Steve's comments: more detail to be taken on the floor plans ie. better entrance areas, suggestion of lobby entrances and use for cafe of external area?

_Floor plan presentation to include more labeling, of adjoining Marriott Hotel Site and other buildings.

_Change of furniture colour to emphasise the main walls.

_Suggestions of more potential floors? Storage and cleaning areas in the art studio areas.

_The building to adopt a more design type image to suite its use for example, what would happen if the railings were to be designed by a graffiti artist?? Interesting!!

I am proposing an Urban Arts Centre on a corner site of Briggate opposite the Viaduct pub on the link to the train station tributary. The concept is to provide an accessible walkway through the corner site to exhibit in a aesthetic way urban art.

Three glass corridors will for the enclosed spaces of the centre that run through a series of vertical platforms that the art will be exhibited on, externally and internally.

Improving the train station to Briggate route through using a series of ramps and creating URBAN ART trail/exhibit.

Developing a series of ramps and spaces along the route highlighting direct routes as well as art exhibiting routes. Situated at a point there will be a building/shelter/pavilion with a place to rest and be further informed of the art work along the route.

BIJLMER STATION
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

GRIMSHAW ARCHITECTS

Bijlmer Station is situated in the southeast of the city, on the broadened track between Amsterdam and Utrecht. The station is one of the five largest stations in the Netherlands, handling approximately 60,000 customers per day. It contains a total of eight tracks (two specifically dedicated to handling 200 km/h high- speed trains) and is a major interchange for passengers connecting to Metro lines and bus routes.

Grimshaw worked with Arcadis Articon Architects on the design of the station on a 70m wide diagonal Boulevard, linking east with west. The tracks and platforms are raised on concrete viaducts, with a total length of 325m. The two-storey viaduct structure allows a generous visual link through the Boulevard and concourse area below. The roof structure covers the central 200m long section of the tracks and the platforms. The form of the roof combines an expression of the dynamics of high-speed travel with the alignment to the diagonal Boulevard. A substantial split in the roof emphasises the direction of the Boulevard below and the access point to the central station hall.

When viewed from the Boulevard, the roof structure provides the bold public face of the project as it flies over the platforms. The entire structure of the roof follows the diagonal of the Boulevard. Each set of tracks is expressed by a 200m long roof vault. Each roof vault is linked to the next, forming an overall structure consisting of 4 identical segments. The trains slide in at the low end, arrive in the high central hall of the roof and slip out through the low opening at the opposite side. Each of the 4 roof sections is supported by 4 raking A-frame columns and a special stabiliser element at the southern end of the roof. At the north and south ends the roof canopy cantilevers 18m beyond the last structural support, amplifying the sense of linearity and direction. The tubular steel A-frames have paired pin connections at ground level and support a continuous V-shaped hollow steel beam that varies in height from 1700 to 4500 mm and in width from 800 to 1850 mm. The underside of the V-beam rises towards the centre from 3.10 m to 6.50 m above the platform level.

In construction, exposed steel ribs were fixed either side of the V-beam at 3.80 m centres to support the glazing over the platforms and the solid roof over the tracks. The latter was constructed as an insulated double skin metal deck with perforated acoustic cladding on the inside. In order to construct the roof economically, all the roof members were designed to have the same angle and length. The variations in the profile of the V-beam are accommodated in the clear opening that runs along the apex of each vault. The opening is framed with perforated metal fin panels varying in height from 800 to 2500 mm at the highest point of the roof. The fins diffuse the light shining through the gap at night to enhance the prominence of the station as a unique focal point for the area.

The station is designed to provide a high level of social security both during the day and at night. Long voids are cut into the platforms to break down the overshadowed sections of the 100 m wide area below the viaducts. These voids improve the sense of safety through visual contact and improved transparency between the platform and ground level areas and also permit a lot of daylight to flood into the Boulevard and the bus station areas.

The station hall and platforms are also designed to allow for maximum transparency to improve the orientation of travelers within the building. Escalators, stairs and glazed lifts lead the public from the ticket hall up to the platforms. The ticket hall as the centre of the station and the adjacent bus station provides a wide variety of commercial activities including a large cafeteria and restaurant. Future commercial development will be located along the north side of the Boulevard and opposite the bus station below the viaduct structure.

Work started on site in 2001 and Bijlmer Station was officially opened by Princess Maxima of the Netherlands on 17 November 2007.
